Asheville-Buncombe Technical CC - Fall 2013

The Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College PBL chapter has new challenges ahead for the 2013-14 school year. After returning from the National Leadership Conference with 2 individual awards, one team award, and one chapter award, we dove right back into fundraising for next year's conference expenses. For many years, our chapter has raised money by running a beverage stand at our local Bele Chere event—a popular downtown music and arts festival with a 35 year history—but this year Bele Chere had somber undertones; this year was the last Bele Chere.

As much as local businesses, musicians and artists will miss the income Bele Chere brings, so too will our club. However, this change in the usual plan presents a valuable opportunity to this year's club members: the opportunity for each member to have a measurable impact on the club as a whole, to offer new fundraising ideas and give meaningful feedback on those ideas, to experience a year where our advisers don't have all the answers and don't have tried-and-true plans. Our chapter has always displayed excellence in following directions, completing projects and winning awards, but this year is different. This year, by necessity, each of our members must also display excellence in action.

This year more than ever, we need every member to keep their eyes and ears open for opportunities to raise money, opportunities to serve our community, and opportunities to grow both as a club and individually. Already our members are coming up with new and promising ideas to engage our campus and our community, and it's exciting!

Of course, fundraising isn't all we will be doing this year. We assisted our SGA with the annual Fall Festival in September, where over 2,000 students gathered to check out information from the departments, organizations and clubs on campus (ours included), dance when the DJ played really good songs, and enjoy lunch. We hosted the Western Region's 2013 Kick-Off again this year, and although not all the chapters could attend, everyone there enjoyed the 60s-themed trivia, and left with all the important info for the upcoming FLDC and the rundown on the SLC and NLC. We will be driving a van full of members to FLDC this year—almost twice as many as last year! In December, we will  be sponsoring head-start kids for A-B Tech's annual Children's Holiday Party again this year, where warm, fuzzy feelings and bruised shins will be had by all—with dozens of toddlers on big wheels, accidents happen, but they're all so cute that you can't be upset! We look forward to many more events and opportunities coming our way in 2014.

And as always, we look forward to another exciting year filled with fun, friendship, education, lifelong experiences, and discovering our own excellence in action!
