Stanly CC - Fall 2013

Following a very successful 2012-2013 year, Stanly Community College’s PBL chapter is already off to a busy start.  On September 19, 2013, five chapter members accompanied Mr. Hazlett to the 2013 Fall Kick-Off.

Chapter officers for the year are:  Krista Bedrin (President), Chuckie Vanhoose (Vice President), Katrina Sams (Secretary-Treasurer), David Osborne (Student Government Association Representative), Hergheng Moua (Social Director), and Germanic Colson (Public Information Officer).

An organizational meeting was held on Monday, October 14, 2013.  Our chapter is excited about attending the upcoming Fall Leadership Conference in Greensboro, NC. Ideas are already in progress for our Chapter Recruitment Display Setup, applicants for the PBL-PD-F scholarship are putting the finishing touches on their applications, and the Non-Trivia Team is already hustling to prepare for competition.

Stanly Community College is also hosting a Fall Festival for students on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, and our chapter is finalizing plans for a PBL table at the event.  Weather permitting, we may exhibit our Chapter Recruitment Display Setup.  We will also be having a basket raffle that will contain 40 items in celebration of our chapter’s 40th anniversary at Stanly Community College.  Proceeds from the basket raffle will be donated to the March of Dimes.

For American Enterprise Day on November 15th, 2013, our chapter is planning to visit and tour the local Chamber of Commerce and have the director conduct the installation of new officers for the year.  In September, Stanly Community College PBL was pleased to learn that Kathy Almond was named President and CEO of the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce.  Kathy was chapter president in 1982 and received state awards in Future Business Leader Executive and Extemporaneous Speaking.  As owner of Designs of Distinction, a local gift and floral design shop, she was Stanly Community College’s PBL Business Person of the Year.

In May, Rathavone Wilder and Courtney Seidenschmidt were among the ten Stanly Community College students who received Outstanding Student Leader medallions at the college’s Leadership Convocation and Luncheon.

In preparation for the National Leadership Conference, the annual PBL dessert auction was held.  A total of twelve items were on the list and, as usual, Ms. Amirtharaj’s cherry cheese cake brought in the highest bid at $42!
