PHI BETA LAMBDA (PBL) MEMBERSHIP

Since 1942, FBLA-PBL has encouraged and supported students in their school-to-career transition by assisting them in learning more about business careers, establishing occupational goals, obtaining firsthand experience in business arenas, practicing effective money management, valuing community responsibility, and getting on-the-job training in a wide range of business activities.  For the local chapter, involvement in the civic and business activities of the local community ensures that your school is at the forefront of current events.  Being involved creates positive publicity for the school in the local media, increases enrollment in business programs, and provides endless opportunities for partnering with local and state businesses.

Phi Beta Lambda membership, and use of our association's name, is available only through affiliation at all three membership levels--local, state, and national.  Each member will receive a state membership certificate and a national membership card.

While membership dues may be remitted at any point during the year, the initial reporting deadline for state and national dues is in mid-October.  Meeting this deadline assures that chapter members receive Fall issues of state and national publications and that chapters satisfy one of the qualifications for Gold Seal Chapter status, Gold Star recognition, and the Terry Lowrance Leadership Award.

Because PBL is a national organization, students have the opportunity to serve as officers on the local, state, regional, and national levels. Members who aspire to leadership roles gain the experience of running a campaign, going through officer training, and playing an important role in the development of the program of work for the year—not to mention the experience of leading the chapter in its activities and acting as an ambassador for the organization.

By now you may be asking yourself these questions...

(+) WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BEING A PBL MEMBER?

As a Phi Beta Lambda member you can...

...Gain Leadership Skills

Whether on the regional, state, or national level, the purpose of any leadership conference is to provide worthwhile activities to assist students in leadership development as they prepare to be tomorrow's business leaders. These conferences consist of general sessions, leadership workshops, business meetings, competitive events, officer elections, special-interest sessions, awards banquet, and social activities.

...Acquire Team working Skills

Chapter service projects provide an opportunity within the community for student to work as a team.  Involvement in such projects represents a planned gift of time and/or money made with your chapter to benefit the community.  Service projects can strengthen your organization and planning skills.  As members work together, they become aware of themselves, their responsibilities as citizens, and their roles as future business leaders.  Students will recognize that business plays an important role in meeting the service needs of the community.

...Learn Networking Skills

Working closely with a business is one of the best ways to prepare Phi Beta Lambda members for meaningful jobs after graduation.  The experience gained in dealing with businesspeople to complete civic projects, make presentations before civic and business associations, and hearing professional speakers can be invaluable.  Businesspeople quickly become aware of students' potential as future employees--not to mention the networking opportunities you gain by working with businesses in your local area.

...Earn Individual Membership Awards

Once you have become a member of PBL you have the opportunity to earn many individual local, state, and national membership awards. These awards are earned by completing the requirements. While striving to achieve these awards you will learn leadership skills as well as networking skills which prepares you for the "working-world." Let Phi Beta Lambda help you to set yourself apart from other graduates in today's competitive job market.

Career and Membership Achievement Award The "Career and Membership Recognition Program" is a national online individual recognition program and requirements are located on the FBLA-PBL web site (www.fbla-pbl.org).  Your chapter members will feel proud wearing the CMAP pins at NLC and state PBL activities! Members may complete requirements for up to three levels of recognition—the Director Level, the Executive Level, and the President level per year. For a preview of the activities for each level and brochures for completing the requirements, see the information provided under Programs.

(+) HOW CAN OUR CHAPTER BUILD OUR MEMBERSHIP?

The state officer team has set a goal to provide chapters with recruitment materials that can be adapted and used by local chapters.

This effort has afforded many sample materials that you can easily edit with your chapter's contact information, print, and distribute to perspective members. There materials have the same theme throughout which allows your chapter to quickly produce professional documents for your membership recruitment campaign.

(+) HOW CAN I RUN FOR A STATE OFFICE?

The State Officer experience can be challenging and exciting, but it will not necessarily be easy.  The challenge begins with your chapter's recognition of state officer talent in you as one of the members.  The challenge continues as you apply the key elements of determination, commitment, preparation, and effort in developing and carrying out a successful election campaign during the State Leadership Conference.  Once elected, the challenge continues even further as state officers seek to carry out the duties of their offices.

Members are not elected to state officer positions alone--nor do they fulfill the requirements of their positions alone.  Rather, officers need the support and encouragement of many people, including:

Parents, school officials, and department heads who need to be informed and supportive of the state officer's effort.  State officers must attend various conferences and meetings during the year and will probably miss some class time.

Local chapter advisers who approve and sign the nomination form serve as coaches and guides through the entire process.  A state officer's local chapter adviser is also automatically a member of the State Executive Council when the officer is elected.

And, chapter officers and members who support the officer candidate's campaign and once elected, support the officer in his or her tasks throughout the year.

Serving as a state officer does require time, energy, and devotion to Phi Beta Lambda, but the benefits to be derived from such service are tremendous.  The State Executive Council sincerely hopes that you will seriously consider nominating one of your deserving, dedicated members for a state office.  We look forward to excellent campaigning this year and, most of all, having a candidate for each elected office.

These are the available State Officer positions:
President
Secretary/Treasurer
Historian
Central Region Vice President
Eastern Region Vice President
Western Region Vice President

The State Handbook Section 09 State Officer Candidate Guide will provide you with the information and forms necessary to run for state office. Please refer to the PBL Calendar for deadline dates for submitting these forms.

(+) HOW CAN I RUN FOR A NATIONAL OFFICE?

Being a national officer is one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences that a student can have as a member of FBLA-PBL. It takes commitment and responsibility, but it’s also a lot of fun. Good leaders inspire others to have confidence in them. Great leaders inspire others to have confidence in themselves. National Officer Candidate Schedule National officer candidates will receive a detailed candidate schedule prior to the National Leadership Conference.

Since candidates for national PBL offices represent the state, NCPBL uses the following guidelines for nomination:

  1. The candidate must be endorsed by the State Executive Committee.  Members wishing to be endorsed must submit to the State Adviser a letter of interest including qualifications, platform and campaign basics, and education plans for the next year; a transcript; and a letter of recommendation from their chapter adviser.  The receipt date for this letter of recommendation and materials is included on the NCPBL Calendar.
  2. As representatives of the state, members wishing State Council endorsement are also to sign the Code of Conduct form that is used for state officer nomination.
  3. The State Council will review completed applications and make decisions on endorsing a candidate and making the official national officer nomination.

As the state nominee, the State Council will assist in the candidate’s campaign.  The candidate is expected to keep the State Council, particularly the State Adviser, informed of matters related to the campaign.

The State Handbook Section 09 State Officer Candidate Guide will provide you with the information and forms necessary to seek endorsement to run for a National office. Please refer to the PBL Calendar for deadline dates for submitting these forms. Please contact the State Adviser (stateadviser@ncpbl.org) for the National Guideline information.

The National Offices available for NCPBL members are:
President
Secretary
Treasurer
Parliamentarian
Southern Region Vice President

(+) HOW CAN WE GET PROFESSIONAL DIVISION MEMBERS INVOLVED?

Here's how you can involve Professional Division members:

  • Invite your PD's to attend your local chapter meetings.
  • Ask them to speak at a local chapter meeting.
  • During FBLA-PBL week, host a reception for your adviser(s) and your PD members or have a special dinner / reception for PD members that have exceeded your expectations during the year.
  • Involve PD members with committees - be a "coach" for fund-raising or community service.
  • Encourage PD's to attend the SLC - offer for the chapter to pay their way (hotel & / or registration) if they work at the SLC (event administrator, judge, leadership development coordinator, PD fund-raising, event coordination, etc.) contact Robbie McDonald for more info on involving your PD's at the SLC.
  • Encourage a PD member from your chapter to run for a professional Division office and be a part of the state committee.
  • Ask PD members to be coaches for members participating in oral and competitive events, as well as the preparation of reports, for the SLC.
  • Use your PD members to form an advisory committee for your chapter. This can lead to networking, involving other business, community service efforts, etc.
  • Nominate an outstanding PD member for the "Distinguished Professional Division Member" award. More information on this award can be found in the Chapter Handbook under the "SLC Guide section".
  • Submit an outstanding PD member for the "Business Person of the Year" award. More information on this award can be found in the Chapter Handbook under the "SLC Guide section".
